Innovative Broadband Connection for Suburban and Rural Areas

Rosenheim, 21 February 2017 – Kathrein, a leading international specialist for reliable, high-quality communication technologies has developed a special antenna in collaboration with the network specialist Nokia to optimise the use of spectrum. Nokia’s FastMile concept connects areas without broadband supply by means of LTE radio frequencies. The solution provides households and companies in suburban and rural areas with a powerful and reliable Internet connection. Nokia plans to launch the innovative system by mid-2017.

LTE for the home is offered by various network operators as an alternative to DSL. The connections are, however, often unstable. In most cases, customers even need an extra LTE antenna in order to have acceptable reception at all. Nokia’s FastMile concept uses existing LTE base stations. These are expanded by a special Kathrein antenna which exploits higher, so far idle, LTE frequency ranges supporting higher throughputs via spectrum-efficient utilisation. There is no need to set up new radio sites, which means significant cost savings for the network operator.

High bandwidth is guaranteed

The basic idea is to establish a radio connection between the mast and the customer – but with FastMile, the connection is via LTE. Network operators know where their customers live and are therefore able to equip each FastMile-capable LTE base station in such a way that high bandwidth is guaranteed. FastMile service is delivered to the user through a FastMile modem featuring advanced antenna technology to maximise the user experience. A WLAN repeater, which also powers the FastMile modem, provides Internet access within the house. A smartphone app makes installation and operation easy.

Kathrein puts Testbed for LTE and 5G into Operation

Kathrein has opened a test environment for pioneering mobile network technologies at its headquarters in Rosenheim. It will be launched in collaboration with the Swedish communications corporation Ericsson. Kathrein will use the testbed to simulate novel applications in a trial network in order to gain valuable insights in the years to come. This will provide the basis for advancement of the current wireless communication standard LTE and the new standard 5G.

“The test environment will allow us to try out various technologies and their interaction in a single overall system – a capability that is very important for our development work,” explains Maximilian Göttl, Head of Portfolio & Innovation in Kathrein’s Communication Products division. We’re creating our own network, as it were, so as to be able to draw conclusions from live operation.” The insights gained in this way will allow systems to be improved on a step-by-step basis, which is essential in connection with the new wireless communication standard 5G in particular.

KEY INSIGHTS FOR FUTURE PRACTICAL APPLICATION

“In this way we can derive recommendations for industry and network operators in terms of optimum system design,” says Göttl. He adds that this is also relevant to the technology area Massive MIMO (Multiple Input, Multiple Output). MIMO already forms part of current LTE technology, where several reception and transmission antennas are used at the same time. In the case of Massive MIMO, dozens or even hundreds of antenna modules are deployed in an array. This allows very high data throughput rates in a frequency band.

One of the focus areas of the testbed trials will be the automotive sector. Cars will be equipped with the appropriate antenna systems so as to optimise data transmission from and to cars. In this way, test runs conducted in Rosenheim will yield valuable insights in terms of future system design. Kathrein is also collaborating with Altair Engineering GmbH. The global CAE software provider whose German headquarters are in Böblingen, provides WinProp, a programm that simulates mobile network coverage based on maps. Real testbed measurements can then be checked against the computer simulation. The ultimate aim is to be able to use computers alone to conduct test runs for future system architectures.

In the new test environment, Kathrein’s innovation department is collaborating with Ericsson’s research department. The Stockholm-based network supplier has been one of Kathrein’s partners for many years, now providing the base stations and other components for the measurements. “The testbed underpins our aspiration to be a pioneer when it comes to new technologies. A New In-Ground Antenna That Revolutionizes Mobile Communication in Cities

Kathrein, the leading global LTE antenna provider* today introduces an innovative solution for wireless densification in city centres. In collaboration with Swisscom, Switzerland’s leading telecom provider, Kathrein developed “Kathrein Street Connect”, an in-ground antenna system that enhances mobile capacity at hotspots with high data traffic. Following a trial period in Bern, Switzerland, the antenna will be deployed in selected cities in early 2016.

According to Swisscom, the mobile data volume generated by customers by surfing, streaming, and downloading doubles approximately every twelve months. The mobile communication network increasingly reaches its capacity limits at highly frequented hotspots such as downtown pedestrian zones. Due to the skyrocketing usage, networks need to be continuously upgraded in order to provide the needed data rates. The way this is currently accomplished is by supplementing macro cells with micro cells mounted on street furniture (street lamps, building walls, etc.). However, the availability of suitable sites, the high cost of site acquisition, regulations with zoning ordinances, and the ability to connect to the core network are problematic.

Making Use of Existing Infrastructure:
To solve these issues, Swisscom developed the concept of a micro cell in which the base station is incorporated into existing cable manholes of the landline infrastructure. The antenna is embedded into the ground in the immediate vicinity by way of a core drilling and is not visible. For the realization of this innovative idea, Swisscom selected network supplier Ericsson for the base station and Kathrein for the antenna solution. “In close collaboration with the experts from Swisscom, we were able to develop this unique antenna to production standard,” explains Manfred Steinbacher, Head of Mobile Communication Antennas for Kathrein.

“An in-ground antenna is a unique innovation”, says Steinbacher. “The particular challenge was to design an antenna and bracket resistant to road vibrations and with exceptional quality. The solution was specifically designed for use in environments with high building density. Additionally, the special lid above the antenna is extremely rugged and sturdy allowing the deployment in streets with heavy goods vehicle traffic”.

Swisscom will test the system in Bern, Zurich, Basel und Lausanne through the end of 2015, followed by large-scale antenna installations throughout Switzerland. “I am very proud that this product will be another milestone in our history of innovations,” says Heinz Herren, Swisscom’s CTO and CIO. “When we brought Kathrein on board, an experienced and competent partner, their profound know-how helped to turn our idea into reality.”

“Kathrein Street Connect“ will be available to network operators in other countries in mid-2016. “We see a high potential for this innovation“, says Joe Doering, Chief Sales Officer of the Kathrein Group.

Winding Down the Year with Wireless – the Tradeshow Circuit 2015 Comes to a Close

It’s been a whirlwind event schedule for the past few months – especially for Kathrein, as we continue to amp up our presence at industry events.  As the oldest antenna manufacturer in the world, we feel it’s our job to share much of what has been learned over the past 100 years and translate that into our vision for 5G, massive MIMO, sectorization, concealment, mmWave, and other antenna innovations. 

We had the pleasure to attend LTE North America this week in Big D – it was a good show and we like that it is in our “backyard”.  It’s a notable industry event in that the organizers do a nice job in bringing in top notch speakers from AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, Telus, Sasktel and key analysts from 451 Research, iGR, Senza Fili, and Mobile Experts.

One resounding message from the Antenna Evolution Focus Day was the importance of Antenna quality in LTE and soon 5G networks.  LTE KPI’s are more stringent than 3GPP and we anticipate 5G to take things even a step further.  Be on the lookout for a new whitepaper from Kathrein that will discuss this topic in more detail.

At the show, the 5G tracks seemed to bring in the biggest audiences from what we observed and it was nice to see big interest in Public Safety as well.  Ken Rehbehn, analyst at 451 Research, as well as a fire fighter himself, tweeted eight times during the presentation from Jeff Bratcher, Acting CTO for FirstNet. It was a fantastic overview on the progress FirstNet has made.  Here’s a few key takeaways:

  1. FirstNet has $6.5 Billion to offset network costs. Cannot go back to Congress to ask for more money.
  2. There is excess capacity in the 20MHz of Band 14 and will commecialize the leftover spectrum.
  3. There are 5 Early Builder Projects and all have a Spectrum Lease Agreement (SMLA) with FirstNet: Texas, Los Angeles, New Jersey, New Mexico, Colorado.
  4. FirstNet has close ties with other countries’ public safety plans – specifically in the UK and South Korea. South Korea is pushing voice the fastest.
  5. There will be a single “awardee” to build out and manage the core network, but will incorporate teaming agreements for national, regional, and rural providers.

Another recent industry event where Kathrein had the pleasure to attend, speak, and exhibit was HetNet Expo in sunny Los Angeles this past October.  As always, Tracy Ford at PCIA does an excellent job of representing the entire HetNet ecosystem via the topics and speakers. Our favorite presenter hands down was the well-spoken Marc Ganzi, CEO of Digital Bridge (which just closed on the acquisition of ExteNet Systems).  He was bullish on the industry as a whole and seemed particularly jazzed about Small Cells over the next few years. Marc shared his views of the Bandwidth Delivery Model and noted:

  1. We need to be creative in our 5G site offerings – multiple forms of “Site Solutions”.
  2. Need to account for MIMO in the future.
  3. CRAN and SDN are part of the future network.
  4. “Owning” the network elements and delivery is critical.
  5. “Spectral efficiencies will be where the battle will be won or lost” – efficiencies in radios, battery life, and devices.
  6. Need more Sites – Macro, Small Cell, DAS, Wi-Fi Offload.
  7. Densify and fortify the network with Small Cells – underlay networks.
  8. Wi-Fi is not going away, not a disrupter.
  9. Distributed Network Services (DNS as he calls it – not DAS) – 74,000 Active Nodes in 2014.
  10. Indoor DNS Market will grow to 12,000 locations and 133,000 nodes by 2020.
