Rosenheim, 22 February 2017 – How will the connected world of tomorrow evolve? Kathrein, a leading international specialist for reliable, high-quality communication technologies, has prepared its Network Vision 2022 in response to this question. The company has developed a model of a future world that clearly illustrates the various requirements of communication networks. Kathrein differentiates between four geographical situations with specific network demands: large urban areas, suburban areas, rural areas and remote areas.
To be able to cope with the enormous increase in data rates in the future, mobile network operators will have to expand and upgrade their networks to ensure customers have powerful and reliable connections. Mobile communication networks will also have to meet new demands in such areas as Industry 4.0, Internet of Things (IoT) or Connected Car.
As an innovation and technology leader in the connected world, Kathrein has set up a project team to develop a vision for the network of the future. “Apart from our own experts from all business units, the project team also included external specialists such as IBM and T-Systems experts. This ensured a multifaceted and universal perspective on the communication network of the future,” says Ralf Exler, Head of Innovation Management at Kathrein.
Six network trends will determine the future
The relevance of megatrends as well as trends in technology and markets to the network of the future was the focus of intensive discussion in the analysis phase. Kathrein deduced six prognoses from these discussions.
1. Massive Data (the amount of data will increase significantly), 2. Massive Connectivities (the number of connected devices will be many times higher than the world population), 3. Coverage Everywhere (areas without network coverage will be provided with a new network infrastructure). 4. Convergence and Virtualisation (all applications will be transmitted via a convergent network, and many network components will be replaced and complemented by software solutions), 5. New Business Models (multiple new business models will be enabled) and finally 6. Overall Security (data and applications will require effective protection that is permanent and universal).
These six Kathrein prognoses will significantly influence the transmission and access networks of tomorrow. It was from these that the project team derived Network Vision 2022.
Different scenarios in different geographical situations
In large cities in particular it will be necessary to expand network capacities significantly. With its Micro C-RAN system K-BOW, Kathrein already provides optimum mobile communication coverage in indoor and campus areas. The company also offers the innovative solutions Kathrein Street Connect, Kathrein Inside Connect and a 4-port micro cell antenna for network densification at hotspots. Such solutions for network densification in city centres will gain importance in the future. Rural areas will need broadband coverage, too: examples here include Connected Car, IoT applications and smart farming.
“Network Vision 2022 illustrates the network requirements of the future. Our prognoses are an important compass for our research and development,” says Anton Kathrein, CEO of the Kathrein Group. “We will expand and develop our Network Vision in close collaboration with customers and partners on an ongoing basis.”
